Nominations are now open for a new round of Blue Plaques, celebrating the people, groups and events that have helped shape the rich history of NSW.
The NSW Government is inviting everyone, from individuals to community organisations, to share a story that deserves to be immortalised with a Blue Plaque.
With more than 70 Blue Plaques now installed across the state from Broken Hill to Bondi, the program honours some of the most inspiring people and defining moments in NSW's history.
Far more than a signpost, Blue Plaques are an invitation to discover the stories that have shaped our state and connect us through a shared identity.
Recent recipients include performer Peter Allen, whose global success grew from a childhood in regional NSW, and Malcolm Cole, the pioneering Aboriginal performer and LGBTQIA+ activist who led the first Aboriginal Mardi Gras float.
Caroline Chisholm, the humanitarian who transformed the lives of immigrant women and families and community champion Emma Jane Callaghan, a midwife, missionary and recorder of Aboriginal language, have also been recognised through the Blue Plaques program.
Last month Australia's first Blue Plaque Trail was opened in Country NSW, commemorating the extraordinary ongoing legacy of the 1965 Freedom Ride.
If you know of an unsung hero, remarkable group or landmark event, now is the time to share that story and help write the next chapter of the Blue Plaques program.
Nominating for a Blue Plaque is easy and can be done online via the Have Your Say website. To be eligible, nominations must:
- relate to a person, group or event that has made a lasting impact on a community in NSW or NSW as a whole
- be appropriate, sensitive and engaging to a wide public audience
- relate to a person who passed away more than 20 years ago OR an event that occurred more than 20 years ago.
Heritage NSW and a panel of community representatives will evaluate nominations against the eligibility criteria and select the deserving recipients in 2027.
Nominations close on Sunday 13 September 2026.
