Nominations open for Queensland Museum Medal

Today is International Museum Day andQueensland Museum is putting the call out to citizen scientists, researchers and community members who have made an impact on the museum to nominate for the prestigious Queensland Museum Medal.

Queensland Museum Network CEO Dr Jim Thompson said past winners include dinosaur explorers, biodiversity leaders, naturalists and icons such as Sir David Attenborough and Steve Irwin.

“This is your chance to join the ranks of the select few who have been honoured with a Queensland Museum Medal, with nominations for the awards now open,” Dr Thompson said.

“The Queensland Museum Medal is a way to celebrate and recognise the people whose work has been invaluable to the organisation, so if you know an individual whose work stands out, please nominate them.

“Over the past years we have been honoured to highlight important collaborations and the significant efforts of individuals and communities, and share these stories with our visitors.”

Introduced by the Board of the Queensland Museum in 1987, the Queensland Museum Medal has recognised some of Australia’s foremost scientists, conservationists, naturalists and community leaders. Previous winners have performed outstanding work or research relevant to the museum’s collections and has benefited Queensland.

Minister for the Arts Leeanne Enoch said museums enrich the cultural and social lives of Queenslanders.

“Particularly in the last year we have seen the importance and positive impacts of scientific research in our communities,” Minister Enoch said.

“The Queensland Museum Medal is a way to honour and recognise individuals who have made major contributions in a field relevant to Queensland Museum and I encourage people to get their nominations in.”

Nominations for the Queensland Museum Medal are based on the individual’s level of impact in the community, the importance of their contribution or achievement, and their alignment with Queensland Museum’s values. Recipients of the Queensland Museum Medal will be awarded a medal and certificate.

Nominations close on 30 July 2021.Winners will be announced by December 2021.
