Wollongong City Council is planning to renovate the historic North Beach Kiosk building in mid-May.
Council said it is currently working with NSW Heritage to ensure the impact of refurbishment on the iconic building’s heritage value is minimized.
“This is a difficult repair and restoration project and we’re taking the time to get it right. We’re working closely with NSW Heritage to make sure we’re doing everything we can to restore this lovely 75-year-old building to its original condition,’’ Wollongong City Council’s Director of Infrastructure & Works Mike Hyde said.
Work will include replacing the failing roof, gutter and parapet on the building, as well as repairs to the windows and doors. Inside the Kiosk itself, the ceiling and joinery will be replaced. The flagpole and Kiosk lettering on the parapet will also be refurbished.
The refurbishment originally planned to commence in early May was delayed due to rainy weather conditions and ongoing preparatory work.
A temporary building to house the Kiosk is being constructed on the grassed area north of the Surf Life Saving Club.
As part of the Blue Mile Masterplan, Council has also started Stage 2B, which includes replacing the existing unformed pathway on the harbour side of Endeavour Drive with the continuation of a three metre-wide concrete pathway and completing the foreshore promenade from the Fish Co-Op footbridge to the Wollongong Harbour entrance road.
The project will also include improvements to pedestrian access to Flagstaff Hill, a minor footpath on the south side of the road, and enhancements to the safety of pedestrian crossing on Endeavour Drive.
