North-West Road Safety Operation detects 16 motorists in just three hours, TAS

North-West police detected 16 motorists breaking the road rules in just three hours during a traffic enforcement operation on the Bass Highway at Sulphur Creek today, Tasmania Police say.

The North-West Road Safety Task Force issued infringement notices for fines and demerit points to:

  • 10 motorists speeding
  • 5 motorists using their mobile phone while driving, and
  • 1 motorist not wearing a seatbelt.

"It’s disappointing to see a number of motorists continuing to break the road rules and drive dangerously on our roads," said Officer in Charge of Western District Road and Public Order Services, Inspector Adrian Shadbolt.

"Significantly, today we detected a driver travelling at 41km/h over the limit (151km/h in a 110 km/h zone) which is incredibly dangerous. The driver was disqualified from driving for 3 months and received a penalty of 6 demerit points and a fine of $692.75.

"Another motorists was detected speeding at 37km/h over the limit in the same area. The driver received a penalty of 5 demerit points and a fine of $489.00.

"In lights of today’s traffic operation results it’s timely to reinforce to drivers that driving dangerously and continuing to break the road rules puts them and others at risk of serious injury and death on our roads.

"As part of our strategy to reduce fatal and serious crashes, Tasmania Police will continue to conduct both covert and overt traffic enforcement operations, and remind motorists – slow down, pay attention, and wear your seatbelt – we could be anywhere"
said Inspector Shadbolt.
