NSW man charged over alleged Rugby match incident

A man has been charged following an incident at a university rugby union match at Macquarie Park today, NSW Police say.

Police will allege about 12pm today, an incident took place on the field of play which resulted in a fight between players.

A man on the side line waiting to play another match, allegedly ran onto the field and became involved in the fight, which was quickly stopped by officials.

The man returned to the side line and allegedly obtained scissors from a first-aid kit and threatened those involved in the fight.

The man allegedly released the scissors when bystanders approached to calm him down.

The man then allegedly spat on a match referee when he was requested to leave the grounds.

Police from Ryde Local Area Command were called to the scene and arrested a 23-year-old man.

He was taken to Ryde Police Station and charged with being armed with intent to commit indictable offence and common assault.

He was granted strict conditional bail to appear before Burwood Local Court on Tuesday 14 June 2016.
