NSW police charge man over wheelie bin fires

Police have charged a man after a number of garbage bins were set alight in Warners Bay overnight, NSW Police say.

About 6.45pm today, police were called to Warners Bay Road following reports of a man setting domestic rubbish bin on fire.

Officers responded and noticed several bins had been destroyed. After an extensive patrol of the area no offender could be located.

About 8.15pm, police received further calls for more damage to bins and with the assistance of a NSW Police Dog a man was located at the rear of a premises on Warners Bay Road.

He was arrested and taken to Belmont Police Station where he was interviewed and charged with malicious damage by fire (x2).

He has been refused bail and will appear at Toronto Local Court today tomorrow.

Officers from Lake Macquarie Local Area Command believe there may be further victims to this crime that have not yet discovered the damage.

The number of damaged bins so far reported to police is three.
