NSW police charge man with attempted murder after claw hammer attack

A man will appear in court tomorrow after allegedly attacking a woman with a claw hammer at Broken Hill yesterday, NSW Police say.

About 9pm yesterday, a 48-year-old woman was seriously assaulted at a house on Morish Street.

Emergency services were contacted and police from Barrier Local Area Command attended and established a crime scene.

The woman was treated at the scene for serious head injuries and airlifted to Royal Adelaide Hospital in a critical condition to undergo surgery.

Following inquiries, shortly after 3.30pm today, a 54-year-old man contacted police and was subsequently arrested in Patton Street.

He was taken to Broken Hill Police Station and later charged with attempted murder and inflict grievous bodily harm with intent.

The man was refused bail and is due to appear at Broken Hill Local Court tomorrow.
