NSW police launch Operation Callaway for ANZAC Day

Police have launched a high-visibility operation for ANZAC Day, one of our most important national occasions.

Operation Callaway began at 3pm today and will continue until the ANZAC Day celebrations end safely tomorrow, NSW Police say.

The operation, involving general duties police from Local Area Commands, assisted by officers from a range of specialist units, including the Traffic and Highway Patrol, PolAir, Mounted Police, Dog Unit, Licensing, and the Public Order Riot Squad is in place to ensure the safety of the community.

Police will be out in force at Sydney CBD events including the Dawn Service, ANZAC Day March, Commemoration Service, and Sunset Service.

In addition, police from Local Area Commands across the state will patrol local and regional events to ensure this national day of remembrance is observed appropriately.

Operation Callaway Commander, Superintendent Mark Walton, said police are reminding people to be sensible, responsible, and to take responsibility for themselves and others.

"This day is about honouring the brave men and woman who have served our country and paying tribute to those who died fighting for our freedom," Superintendent Walton said.

"Like all major events, we want people to enjoy ANZAC Day in a safe, secure environment, without the fear of being subjected to anti-social behaviour or alcohol-related crime.

In the interest of road safety, pedestrians and motorists are advised to follow the direction of police and marshals particularly around Martin Place and along the march route.

"This is important with changes to pedestrian access points due to the ongoing construction of the light rail on George Street," Superintendent Walton said.

For the safety of all patrons, security staff may conduct bag checks upon general public attending the Dawn Service at the Cenotaph.

Due to large crowds expected in the CBD, police are also encouraging people to leave the car at home and use public transport.

"Public transport is there for everyone to use for what is set to be an enjoyable ANZAC Day. Don’t ruin a good day out with foolish behaviour," Superintendent Walton said.

"Consuming alcohol on public transport is not permitted – Police Transport Command will be targeting anyone drinking alcohol on trains, buses and ferries."

Many roads will be closed and special-event clearways will be in place throughout the Sydney CBD.
