NSW police operation to commence as inquiries continue into death of nine-month-old girl

A major police operation will be conducted at Tweed Heads today as inquiries continue into the death of a nine-month-old girl, whose was located on a Queensland beach last week, NSW Police say.

About 12.30am (Queensland time) last Monday (19 November 2018), emergency services were called to Staghorn Avenue and the Esplanade, Surfers Paradise, after a nine-month-old girl was found unresponsive.

Paramedics declared the baby deceased at the scene.

An investigation was launched by Queensland Police Service, with inquiries revealing it is likely the baby died in NSW.

The investigation is now being led by NSW Police Force’s Homicide Squad under Strike Force Palua.

As part of the ongoing investigation, NSW Police Force will conduct a major land and water police operation both at Tweed Heads from 9am today (Monday 26 November 2018).

Strike Force Palua detectives and officers from Tweed/Byron Police District will be stationed at Jack Evans Harbour in a mobile command bus to speak with the community and potential witnesses.

Investigators are keen to speak with anyone who was in the area during the evening on the Saturday (17 November 2018), and saw or heard anything suspicious.

Officers from the Marine Area Command will search the Tweed River and outlying foreshores and will be assisted by police divers, who are continuing to conduct dives in line with tidal and current flows on the day of the incident.

Search experts from the Public Order and Riot Squad will conduct extensive line searches along the foreshores and parklands that form Jack Evans Harbour, Cunningham Park, and foreshores of Tweed River.
