NSW police pleased with New Years Eve celebrations

Police are pleased with the crowds behaviour that joined in the celebrations across Sydney to bring in the New Year, NSW Police say.

Operation Narimba commenced on Friday 29 December 2017, consisting of General Duties officers from Local Area Commands across the state and specialist units including Public Order & Riot Squad, Police Transport Command, Operations Support Group, Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, Licensing Police, Mounted Unit, Dog Unit, Marine Area Command and PolAir.

The operation saw additional police working throughout the night and into the morning to ensure a safe and secure environment as millions of people converged on the Sydney Harbour foreshore and at events across the state to celebrate the arrival of 2018.

So far during Operation Narimba, seven people were arrested for assault police offences and six people for a number of offences including offensive behaviour and affray.

A 17-year-old teenage boy sustained serious burns after a firework exploded in Cromer Heights about 11.40pm (Sunday 31 December 2017). He was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital for treatment.

Operation Narimba Commander, Assistant Commissioner Mark Walton, said the operation, so far, was successful in allowing millions of Sydneysiders and visitors to enjoy their celebrations with family and friends.

"Prime vantage points filled up fast around the Sydney foreshore early in the evening and while a number of incidents occurred, most people were well behaved." Assistant Commissioner Walton said.

"While the fireworks may have finished, we are urging the public that are continuing their celebrations into the morning to do so safely, look after your friends and please stop and think before you act."

"The safety of NSW residents is of the utmost importance to us, and we have police in the air, on our roads and on the water to ensure it is a good night to remember."

"With only a small number of incidents occurring throughout the night, it is a credit to the community and the work of police and other agencies."

"Overall, the fireworks were spectacular and I am very pleased to say that 2018 was met safely. Happy New Year to you all." Assistant Commissioner Walton said.
