Police are urging members of the community to plan ahead and commemorate safely to honour the ANZAC spirit respectfully.
Operation Callaway, a high-visibility policing strategy, will be in place next Tuesday (25 April 2017) to ensure the safety of the community, NSW Police say.
The operation involves general duties police from Local Area Commands, assisted by officers from a range of specialist units, including the Traffic and Highway Patrol, PolAir, Mounted Police, Dog Unit, Licensing, and the Public Order Riot Squad (PORS).
Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to attend commemoration services and events across the state with officers out in force to ensure people can enjoy the day without disruption.
Operation Callaway Commander, Superintendent Mark Walton, wants people to have a good time but is reminding members of the community to act in the appropriate spirit of ANZAC.
"ANZAC Day is about honouring and remembering all those who fought, endured, suffered and died to defend our rights and maintain our freedom," Superintendent Walton said.
"Police will be patrolling the CBD and will not tolerate dangerous, criminal or anti-social behaviour. Public safety is the number one priority.
"As this year’s ANZAC Day falls on a Tuesday, we are anticipating some celebrations will stretch over from the weekend so remember the reasons for commemorating this day and act in the true Anzac spirit – look out for your mates," he said.
Superintendent Walton also urged people to leave the car at home and take public transport.
"This year is the second time in the event’s history the ANZAC Day CBD March route has changed due to the construction of a light-rail line," Superintendent Walton said.
"Public transport is the best option for anyone planning to watch the march, and police encourage people to allow plenty of time to plan their trip and find a good spot along the new march route.
"A number of road closures, clearways and traffic diversions will be in place within Sydney’s CBD so if you have to drive, please allow plenty of time."
