Police from Newcastle City Local Area Command are appealing for the community to maintain vigilance in securing their cars after a rise of incidents involving theft from vehicles in the Newcastle area, NSW Police say.
Officers have seen an increase in reports of thefts with thieves targeting cars that are easily accessible, often with unlocked doors.
There are steps that can be taken to avoid making your vehicle a target to thieves. These include:
- Ensuring there is no visible cash, valuables or electronic equipment in your vehicle,
- Locking your car every time you are you leave it,
- Never leaving the keys in the ignition, even for just a minute or two,
- Parking in well-lit areas, particularly at night,
- Making sure windows are closed properly,
- Safeguarding your keys. Never leave keys on a desk at work or in an easily accessible area in your home,
- Not leaving luggage or sports equipment unattended on roof racks, and
- Never labelling your keys with your home address or vehicle registration.
Detective Inspector Steve Laska from Newcastle City Local Area Command said, "These incidents have been widespread throughout the Command.
"We are finding that people are leaving personal items and expensive electronic equipment in their cars. The cost and effort it takes to replace these items can be stressful and time consuming. Members of the community are able to minimise the chances of theft from their personal vehicles by ensuring they take these simple steps."
