The Northern Territory Fire and Emergency Services (NTFES) is pleased to announce the appointment of Andrew Thomas as Executive Director Bushfires NT.
This appointment follows a rigorous, merit-based selection process to ensure strong leadership for Bushfires NT.
Andrew is an accomplished emergency services leader with more than 37 years of operational and executive experience across ambulance, fire, and incident management roles in both government and non-government sectors. He brings extensive knowledge and proven leadership to this critical role.
For the past six years, Andrew has served as Director Ambulance Services at St John Ambulance Australia (NT), where he successfully led major organisational changes, strategic planning, and risk management initiatives. His career also includes senior positions with SA Ambulance Service, including Intensive Care Paramedic, Operations Manager, and Acting Director Operations, as well as service with the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
Andrew's qualifications include a Bachelor of Nursing, paramedic certification, and completion of the Public Sector Management Program and the Australian Institute of Company Directors Course, alongside numerous governance and leadership programs. He is widely recognised for his ability to motivate multidisciplinary teams, communicate complex information effectively, and maintain professionalism under pressure.
Andrew will commence in the role in early February 2026.
NTFES thanks Jacqui Forrest for her outstanding contribution while acting as Executive Director Bushfires NT since February 2025. Jacqui has led Bushfires NT through significant organisational change and demanding fire seasons, modernising operations, improving processes, and strengthening partnerships. Her leadership and commitment have positioned Bushfires NT for future success.
