Off-duty police officer assaulted in Newcastle

A man has been charged after he allegedly assaulted an off-duty police officer in Newcastle yesterday.

About 3am yesterday, an off-duty police officer stopped his vehicle at the traffic lights at the intersection of Donald Street and Beaumont Street, Hamilton, NSW Police say.

As three men crossed the road, one of the men allegedly placed his hands and then sat on the vehicle, bouncing it up and down.

The off-duty officer got out and whilst he was speaking to one of the men, a second man approached him and allegedly punched him in the face, knocking him to the ground.

The three men left.

Officers from Newcastle City Local Area Command attended and commenced an investigation.

The off-duty officer, a 26-year-old man, was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics and taken to John Hunter Hospital under observation. He has since been released.

Following inquiries, about 11.20am today, a 24-year-old man was arrested at a home in Cessnock.

He was taken to Cessnock Police Station where he was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The man was granted conditional bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 16 February 2017.
