Officer Charged - Northern Region 2 April

An officer has been charged following an investigation into a crash near Beresfield last year.

About 7.40pm on Thursday 30 October 2025, police attempted to stop a suspected unregistered motorcycle on Kingstown Road, Woodberry.

The rider of the motorcycle – a 28-year-old man – allegedly accelerated away from police before losing control and hitting a pole and a police vehicle.

Police assisted the rider before he was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics and taken to the John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition. He has since been released.

Following extensive inquiries, the driver of the police vehicle – a 24-year-old constable attached to a Northern Region command – was charged yesterday (Wednesday 1 April 2026), with negligent driving not occasioning death or grievous bodily harm.

He was issued a court attendance notice to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 14 April 2026.

The officer's employment status is under review.
