Officer charged with assault in Redfern

A police officer has been charged following the alleged assault of a man in custody at Redfern Police Station earlier this year, NSW Police say.

The alleged incident took place on Friday 17 June 2016, when a 52-year-old man was allegedly assaulted by a male constable.

The man was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital where he was treated and released the following morning.

The officer, who is attached to a Central Metropolitan Region command. was charged on Friday 4 November 2016 with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and common assault.

The matter was mentioned at Downing Centre Local Court today, and adjourned to the same court on Monday 6 February 2017.

The officer remains suspended on pay.
