Officers Charged After Hoppers Crossing Arrest

Detectives from Homicide Squad have today charged two police officers with negligent manslaughter following the death of a man in Hoppers Crossing last year.

The two police officers - a 29-year-old male constable and 45-year-old male sergeant, both from North West Metro Region - have been suspended from Victoria Police since July last year.

Both officers have been bailed and will appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 12 September.

The charges relate to the death of a 35-year-old Hoppers Crossing man, who was arrested at the corner of Heaths and Tarneit Roads Hoppers Crossing on 15 July 2024 and subsequently died in hospital eight days later on 23 July.

Quotes attributable to Deputy Commissioner Wendy Steendam, Public Safety and Security:

"Since the incident occurred last year, it has been subject to investigation by the Homicide Squad with oversight from Professional Standards Command.

"I understand the news today will be concerning and difficult for many in the community, however I want to reassure them that Victoria Police does not shy away from taking action to uphold community trust and confidence in our organisation.

"The overwhelming majority of our police do the right thing day in and day out and provide exemplary service to the community. Today's update should not take away from their efforts more broadly.

"However, it is vital that where incidents such as this occur, they are investigated thoroughly regardless of a police officer's rank, position or tenure.

"Our thoughts today are also with the Briggs family and we will ensure they continue to have a range of support services in place as the matter progresses."
