The Morrison Government will provide $360,000 to support the purchase of a unique Australian-made timber cabinet, created by one of Australia’s master craftsmen, for the Lismore Regional Gallery’s permanent collection.
The Hannah Cabinet took six and a half years to create and was made by Lismore-based master craftsman Mr Geoff Hannah OAM, whose work is held in private and official collections around the world. His work includes the Yarralumla Cabinet in Government House, Canberra and two artefact boxes for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Coach.
Minister for Communications, Cyber Safety and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP, said the Hannah Cabinet is an incredible work which showcases the very best of Australian craftsmanship and will be a tourism drawcard for Lismore and the wider region.
“Mr Geoff Hannah OAM is a master craftsman and it is fitting that his last large scale piece, the exceptional Hannah Cabinet, becomes a permanent part of Australia’s cultural landscape. Art is vital to our national identity and the Australian Government recognises the significant contribution fine art practitioners including Mr Hannah make to our cultural life,” Minister Fletcher.
Mr Hannah OAM studied at the Palace of Versailles, the Louvre in Paris and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. He is a renowned teacher of his craft. In 2018 Mr Hannah was awarded the Order of Australia for service to the visual arts through the production of furniture and marquetry.
Member for Page, Mr Kevin Hogan MP, said securing the Hannah Cabinet for Lismore will provide a boost for the region and demonstrates what can be achieved when the Commonwealth, state Government and community work together.
“The Australian Government’s contribution of $360,000 will complement funding provided by the New South Wales State Government and public donations to support this important acquisition,” Mr Hogan said.
