Operation Pedro Focussing on cycling and pedestrian safety in Sydney

Officers from the Traffic and Highway Patrol, along with Surry Hills, Sydney City, Redfern, Leichhardt, Newtown, and Harbourside Local Area Commands will be out in force today to conduct Operation Pedro 5, focussing on cyclist and pedestrian safety in the Sydney CBD and surrounding road networks., NSW Police say

The operation will run today tomorrow from 6am to 6pm and will focus on non-compliance by cyclists for helmet use, negligent or aggressive riding and disregard for road rules in order to deter poor road user behaviour.

Commander of the Traffic & Highway Patrol Command, Assistant Commissioner John Hartley, said these operations were important in the prevention of further fatalities on our roads.

"So far this year, two cyclists have died on our roads, compared with three at the same time last year," Assistant Commissioner Hartley said.

"Still, that means we’ve lost two lives too many. I urge all cyclists to do the right thing by not putting themselves and other road users at risk.

"All operations run by the Traffic & Highway Patrol Command, and our partnership with the NSW Centre for Road Safety, are aimed at saving lives.

"Last year 61pedestrians and seven cyclists lost their lives on NSW roads. Together, with all road users, we want to do everything possible to ensure that we reduce road trauma."

"So far this year 194 people have died on NSW roads, compared to 154 in the same period last year. "Through this and other road safety operations, we want to continue to drive down the road toll in NSW," said Assistant Commissioner Hartley.
