Operation Safe Speed October 2017 results, SA

Operation Safe Speed, where police targeted speeding drivers and drivers creeping over the speed limit, has revealed police detected three times more speedsters than normal over the weekend operation, according to SA Police.

In the three days of the operation from Friday,13 October until Sunday,15 October, police detected 934 drivers speeding on roads across the state. This compares with the previous weekend of Friday, 6 October to Sunday, 8 October when the operation wasn’t running, where 290 drivers were detected speeding.

Of the 934 detected, 530 received expiation notices, five were reported and 428 were cautioned.

Superintendent Anthony Fioravanti, officer in charge of Traffic Support Branch, says speed is a contributing factor in over 25 per cent of all fatalities on our roads.

"Research also indicates that the risk of a casualty crash doubles with each 5km/h over the speed limit in a 60 km/h zone. For these very reasons we will continue to run speed detection operations and deploy speed detection devices at any time of the day or night."

Operation Safe Speed included an education focus, with police reminding drivers of the hazards of creeping and speeding over the legal limit.

"A brochure produced by the Motor Accident Commission was provided to all drivers police spoke with.

"Police cautioned a high number of drivers over the weekend – 428 – showing the importance of the education component of this operation.

"All drivers need to be aware that the speed a vehicle is travelling when a collision occurs has an impact on the severity of injuries. Drivers must drive to the posted speed limits and drive to the prevailing conditions – lives depend on drivers making the right choices."
