Operation Stop Drink/Drug Drive - results, South Australia

A Roadside Breath Testing (RBT) blitz by police on Saturday night, targeting drivers under the influence of alcohol and/or illicit drugs, saw 3480 motorists alco-tested, with 31 drivers returning positive results.

The highest reading of the night was recorded by a 36-year-old Dulwich man who was arrested after he drove off from a driver testing station on Goodwood Road and returned a reading of 0.207. (Read more here.)

A total of 145 drug tests were also conducted, with 26 drivers returning a positive result.

In total police impounded 24 vehicles, and 20 drivers were instantly disqualified from driving.

The unannounced road safety operation, which was conducted in every Local Service Area and District across the state between 7pm on Saturday night and 3.30am on Sunday morning, also saw police issue 14 defect notices, report six drivers, caution one and issue 25 expiation notices for a variety of offences.

Superintendent Bob Gray said of particular concern was that three drivers failed to stop at two RBT locations – putting police and members of the public at risk.

"This type of irresponsibility by drivers is totally unacceptable," he said. "Police will conduct Operation Stop Drink/Drug Driving again in the future, but motorists should also remember that any police officer can pull a driver over to undergo testing at any time.

"I urge motorists to consider their actions – the choices they make can have a devastating impact."
