Operation targeting COVID compliance, South Australia

South Australia Police conducted an operation targeting compliance with COVID SAfe Check-Ins using QR codes.

During the seven day operation from 22 January to 28 January, police conducted 846 compliance checks and found 732 businesses to be compliant.

Commissioner of Police and State Coordinator Grant Stevens said although the majority of businesses were doing the right thing, it is disappointing that 114 businesses were non-compliant.

"Police have continued with an education approach to COVID restrictions as we recognise things can change quickly, however by now we expect businesses to understand their requirements when it comes to ensuring people check into their businesses and have a COVID Marshal present," the Commissioner said.

Four businesses received $5,000 general expiation notices, plus the Victims of Crime levy. These fines were given for COVID Marshal, QR breaches, close contact breaches and COVID-Safe Plan breaches.

"Businesses are obligated to make sure that people coming into their premises check in, there's also an obligation on the patron to check in at some point whilst they're visiting that business, they must have a trained COVID Marshal with identification displayed and have their COVID-Safe Plan checked," he said.

Nineteen businesses were given cautions and three received written directions.

Meanwhile a Queensland woman was arrested in Norwood on 21 January for breaching four directions and was refused police bail. She arrived from Brisbane on 8 January from Brisbane via Adelaide airport and nominated a Norwood address to self-quarantine.

She made contact with a prisoner at the Adelaide Remand Centre and visited him after giving a false name. Police liaised with SA Health and found she had not had COVID tests on day 1 and 5, again in contravention of the self-quarantine direction.

She was later found again breaching the direction to self-quarantine while on her way to local shops. She was taken to the City Watch House, where she was subjected to a rapid screening test. The police officers who arrested the woman were also directed into preventative self-quarantine.
