Operation Vallejo yields disturbing results

Interim results from Operation Vallejo, which targets Melbourne North’s most vulnerable road users, has revealed disturbing numbers of traffic offences, Victoria Police say.

Commencing within the Melbourne North area on 3 August, the operation has so far detected 209 traffic offences, with particularly poor results in relation to the high number of people still using mobile phones or speeding. Results to date include:

• 13 low level speeding offences

• 52 mid to high speed offences including one driver detected speeding over 25 km/h.

• 31 drivers detected disobeying traffic signs

• 6 drivers detected disobeying traffic lights

• 9 people who failed to wear a seat belt

• 62 drivers who were using their mobile phones whilst driving (including 1 motorcycle rider), and

• 10 riders who failed to wear a bicycle helmet.

Operation Vallejo will run until the end of October at which time a review of the impact will be undertaken, and other strategies identified if required.

The Melbourne North area has had three fatalities so far this year, which were all vulnerable road users, including one pedestrian, one cyclist and one motorcycle rider.
