CORVALLIS, Ore. - In a nod to October being World Series month, the American Strings Series features an evening with Peter Buck and Scott McCaughey of The Baseball Project on Wednesday, Oct. 16.
The show starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Majestic Theatre, 115 SW 2nd St., Corvallis.
The American Strings Series, presented by Oregon State University and the Majestic Theatre, brings in artists from around the country for an in-depth look at how and why stringed instruments play such a profound role in American music.
Buck, a founding member of R.E.M., and McCaughey of the bands Young Fresh Fellows, The Minus 5 and R.E.M., are veteran performers who share a love of baseball.
Buck, McCaughey and three other veteran rockers who are also fans of the national pastime comprise The Baseball Project.
Formed in 2007 by McCaughey and Steve Wynn (The Dream Syndicate, Steve Wynn and the Miracle 3, Gutterball), The Baseball Project began as a way for a couple of friends to pay musical tribute to the game - and maybe score some free tickets in the process. But the band has since blossomed into a full-fledged touring and recording group, with a lineup that also includes drummer Linda Pitmon (Steve Wynn and the Miracle 3, Zuzu's Petals) and R.E.M.'s Mike Mills.
Hosted by Bob Santelli of the GRAMMY Museum and now the OSU College of Liberal Arts' director of popular music and performing arts, the concert and conversation that make up each segment of the strings series are opportunities to appreciate and better understand the American music tradition.
All seats are reserved. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door and may be purchased online or in person at the Majestic Box Office, which is open from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and one hour before the performance. Tickets may also be purchased by phone at 541-738-7469.
The Majestic Theatre participates in Corvallis Arts for All, making $5 tickets (limit two per person) available to people with an Oregon Trail Card. These tickets much be purchased in person at the box office.
