This May, Mount Martha House will be transformed into a living time capsule of the 1960s and 1970s-two decades that reshaped Australian culture, design and social life.
On Saturday 16 May, Our Stories: Living the 60s & 70s invites visitors to step back into an era defined by bold aesthetics, creative experimentation and cultural change. Set within the historic Mount Martha House overlooking Port Phillip Bay, the one-day event will explore how the optimism and innovation of the period shaped life on the Mornington Peninsula.
Headlining the program is renowned Australian design advocate and broadcaster Tim Ross. Known for his engaging talks on architecture and Australian modernism, Ross will reflect on the era that transformed the way Australians lived-from the homes they built to the interiors, objects and spaces that defined everyday life.
With his signature mix of humour, storytelling and deep knowledge, Ross has built a national following for his work exploring Australia's design history. His appearance at Mount Martha House offers a rare opportunity to hear from one of the country's most passionate voices on mid-century design.
Beyond the headline talk, the house will come alive with immersive experiences inspired by the colour, creativity and carefree spirit of the 60s and 70s. Visitors can wander through retro-styled interiors featuring paisley furnishings, bean bags, lava lamps and psychedelic hues, alongside chill-out zones and a nostalgic television lounge screening vintage advertisements and film clips.
Actor Annie Laurenson will welcome guests in full costume, bringing the era vividly to life.
A series of talks and hands-on workshops will run throughout the day, exploring fashion, design and surf culture of the period. Visitors can also take part in creative sessions including Flower Power Floristry, Macramé Revival and Radical Rags: Upcycling Fashion, while local history groups present displays and insights into the Peninsula's past.
"Our Stories brings history to life in such a fun and engaging way," said Acting Mayor Councillor Paul Pingiaro. "It's a chance for community to come together to honour the styles, sounds and stories that have shaped life on our Mornington Peninsula."
Music and food will help set the scene, with a café-style dining space reminiscent of a 1960s and 70s coffee lounge. Guests can enjoy nostalgic fare prepared by the Country Women's Association while live performances from the Piano Wizard Man provide a warm and lively soundtrack.
Vintage fashion and surfboard displays will further highlight the Peninsula's distinctive coastal identity, reflecting the influence of surf culture during the era.
Visitors are encouraged to dress the part, with a best-dressed competition celebrating standout retro style. A Women's Weekly-inspired cake competition will also pay homage to the iconic recipes and flamboyant desserts of the time.
With its rich mix of design, music, workshops and immersive storytelling, Our Stories: Living the 60s & 70s celebrates the creativity and cultural shifts that continue to shape the Mornington Peninsula today.
