Over 150 Speeding Tickets Issued at Summernats

More than 150 speeding infringements were issued by NSW Police, as part of a road operation in the lead up and during car festival Summernats in the ACT.

Between Thursday 8 January 2026 and Sunday 11 January 2026, officers attached to Traffic and Highway Patrol Command were deployed to local roads and major road networks leading to accommodation precincts and the Summernats event in Mitchell, ACT

The following results were achieved by NSW Police during the road operation;

1,878 Random Breath Tests (RBTs) conducted

241 Random Drug Tests ( RDTs) conducted

2 positive RBTs

15 Positive RDTs

157 speeding infringements issued

78 traffic infringement notices issued

13 red defect notices issued (needs imminent repairs)

32 yellow defects detected (issued for minor vehicle faults such as worn tyres)

4 unauthorised drivers (4 suspended drivers, 2 unlicensed)

21 person searches

10 vehicle searches

Notable incidents include;

About 12:39am, on Saturday 10 January 2026, officers attached to Traffic and Highway Patrol detected a station wagon travelling on the Federal Highway, Bywong, about 33km north-east of Queanbeyan, allegedly travelling at 178km/hr in a 110km/hr signposted zone. The 50-year-old male driver was pulled over and issued with an infringement notice for Class A motor vehicle exceed speed limit – over 45km/hr. His license was suspended for 6 months and the offences carries a fine of $3054.

Operation Summernats 2026 also included assistance from Monaro Police District, Southern Region Operation Support Group and Traffic and Highway Patrol Command focusing on public order, liquor licensing and anti-social behaviour, within the Eaglehawk Precinct.
