Overextraction Is High Priority For Resources Regulator

Resources Victoria continues to use a range of compliance tools to ensure potential impacts of quarrying on the environment are minimised and sites can be rehabilitated when production ends.

During a successful compliance program in 2025 Resources Victoria visited almost 900 sites across the state to ensure operators are meeting the obligations in their work plans, including complying with extraction limits.

Addressing overextraction remains a high priority for the regulator. Operators must take immediate action where area for improvement is identified.

Resources Victoria recently issued an infringement notice against a quarry operator in the state's northwest after directives to stop extracting material from unapproved areas within the quarry were ignored.

Mallee Earthmoving and Excavations Pty Ltd continued extracting raw materials at their Meringur site west of Mildura, after being made aware of the issue by Resources Victoria and ordered to stop.

Extracting from unapproved areas continued between August and September 2025.

The quarry operator is now operating to its Work Plan and Resources Victoria will ensure ongoing compliance.

Operators must understand and implement the commitments in their work plan, including their boundaries and extraction limits.

Resources Victoria oversees the state's quarry sectors to protect public safety, infrastructure and the environment.
