Forty firefighters responded when a fire broke out in the room of an aged care resident in Pakenham just before 11pm last night.

Eight fire trucks responded to reports of a structure fire at the Princes Highway facility where a fire was confirmed in room on the second floor.

About 35 residents were evacuated to a different part of the building, and several assessed by Ambulance Victoria on the scene.

One resident was taken to hospital with minor burns to their hands.

The fire was extinguished quickly and contained to one room.

The cause of the fire is unknown but not deemed to be suspicious. Fire investigators will attend today.
