Fire and Emergency Services Minister Craig Crawford today (Tuesday) launched the annual 'Support Our Savers' fundraising appeal with a donation of $50,000 from the Palaszczuk Government.
Mr Crawford urged all Queenslanders to "dig deep" and support the state’s surf lifesaving volunteers during SOS Week.
"We should never take for granted that we and our visiting tourists enjoy our beaches under the watchful eye of trained volunteers who give their time," Mr Crawford said.
Last year, the Government provided Surf Life Saving Queensland with a $17 million funding package over three years following the renewal of a Service Agreement with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES).
"Training and equipping surf lifesavers requires significant funding which the government is pleased to assist with," Mr Crawford said.
"I encourage everyone to contribute to the appeal and support the state's red and yellow army.
"On our beaches right up and down the coast, volunteer lifesavers are there ready to lend a helping hand if needed – at no cost.
"Now through SOS Week we can all give them a helping hand by donating crucial funds to make sure everyone who goes to the beach returns home safely.
"Every dollar raised means our surf lifesaving clubs can receive the vital equipment, training and resources they need to continue raising their red and yellow flags along our coastline."
SLSQ chief executive officer John Brennan thanked the Government for its donation.
"This service is offered free of charge but it’s important to remember that protecting beaches comes at a significant cost," Mr Brennan said.
"This generous donation is a great way to start our SOS Week fundraising appeal."
