Park Etiquette For Dogs And Their Owners

Our residents are proud pooch-lovers, with more than 14,600 dogs registered in Boroondara.

However, we're getting a growing number of complaints about poor owner etiquette and dog-related nuisance in our parks and surrounding streets.

Please be responsible and alert when walking your pet so everyone can enjoy our parks and streets safely:

  • Your dog should only ever be off-lead in off-lead parks. It's an offence to take your dog off its leash before it's inside a designated off-lead park.
  • Actively supervise your dog at all times - your dog should never threaten people or animals and must respond to voice or hand controls when off-lead.
  • Keep your dog at least 10 m away from all playgrounds when off-lead.
  • Keep your dog at least 30 m away from in-use barbecues or picnic areas, public meetings or sports events, including matches or organised training.
  • Always bring dog-waste bags and always pick up after your dog.

Boroondara has more than 50 parks where dogs may be off-lead. Go to our website which shows more than 50 locations where you can exercise your dog off lead. You might also like to try our fenced dog park - at Gordon Barnard Reserve in Balwyn North.
