Parramatta's next generation are set to have their voices heard, with the introduction of the City of Parramatta's first-ever Youth Inclusion Framework after it was given the green light by Council.
The framework guides Council staff and youth organisations on how best to include and empower young people as decision makers and provide a platform for people aged 12-24 years old to contribute to the development of future services, infrastructure and initiatives.
By providing the foundation for council officers to create and execute meaningful action plans, this framework will improve inclusion outcomes with work to begin immediately.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter welcomed the framework, saying young people need to be included in decisions made by Council.
"We want our next generation to become engaged with local decision making - this framework guides staff on how best to do this," Cr Zaiter said.
"Decisions made in the chamber affect everyone locally, particularly young people, so it's really important we do what we can to spark their interest and get them talking, whether it's about a brand-new park, program or a major piece of infrastructure.
"Around 37,000 young people live in Parramatta, and I am proud that City of Parramatta is and always will be a place where young people are valued, supported and empowered to thrive.
"We have an ambitious vision to deliver by 2050, so the decisions we make today will have a huge impact on young people's future."
The framework will also be used by Council to help make young people feel safe and supported, giving them opportunities to learn, work and lead, provide genuine spaces to connect, socialise and be creative and feel valued as decision makers.
"We acknowledge the challenges young people face and the support they need to overcome barriers and achieve their aspirations," Cr Zaiter said.
"I am proud that the City of Parramatta is and always will be a place where young people are valued, supported and empowered to thrive."
