Pinery bushfire investigation complete, SA

Officers from Task Force Pinery, established by the SA Police Major Crime Investigation Branch to investigate the fire that started in the Lower Mid North on 25 November 2015, have completed their investigation into the cause and circumstance of the fire that claimed two lives, according to SA Police.

Task Force Pinery called on the expertise of a number of fire behavioural experts. That resulted in narrowing the area of fire origin to a very discreet point in a paddock on a property in Pinery.

Further examination of that area for potential ignition sources revealed a car battery that was immediately alongside a wire fence. That was the only potential ignition source in that area.

The investigation has not revealed any person to have been present at the property at the time the fire started.

There are no charges being considered against any person as the cause of the fire is not believed to be from any criminal act.

Police have spoken to members of the public that cut the fence to the property in an attempt to fight the fire.

Indications on the fire ground are that the fire had been burning without having spread far for some time before the fire was first detected and reported to the CFS.

Police are still in the process of preparing a report for the coroner. Its thorough nature means that it will still take some time to complete due to the comprehensive nature of the report.
