Plea for public assistance after Ashburton armed robbery

Police are appealing for witnesses following an armed robbery in Ashburton this afternoon.

Investigators have been told a 16-year-old boy was approached by a male on High Street around 2pm.

The male attempted to grab the boy's bag then assaulted him with a sharp object.

He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The offender fled with the victim's bag along Welfare Parade, heading north, then east down a laneway.

The offender is perceived to be Caucasian in appearance, approximately 16-years-old, about 170cm tall with a slim build and long blond hair.

He was wearing a black top and grey tracksuit pants.

The investigation remains ongoing.
