Pledge to drive safely this Fatality Free Friday and every day

Queenslanders are being urged to drive safely after 11 lives were tragically lost on the state's roads this week.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey today joined road safety ambassadors including Craig Lowndes, Corey Parker and Australian Road Safety Foundation CEO Russell White in Brisbane to take part in the nationwide Fatality Free Friday pledge, and pleaded with motorists to keep safety front of mind when heading out onto the roads.

"This week has been one of the most horrific on our roads in recent years," Mr Bailey said.

"These crashes will move off the front pages of newspapers, but the long term impacts of these deaths and injuries will continue be felt by Queensland families and communities for a long time to come.

"Our goal is a zero road toll and this Fatality Free Friday, we're asking every Queenslander to make the pledge to drive safely not only today, but every day.

"Unfortunately, the 'fatal five' - speeding, distraction, alcohol and drugs, fatigue and not wearing a seatbelt - continue to be the major causes of death on our roads.

"When you head onto the road, don't speed, don't drive fatigued, wear your seatbelt and avoid distractions of any kind.

"When a crash occurs, families and friends suffer, and the investigations into these terrible crashes are left to the brave emergency workers who wish each visit to one of these scenes will be their last.

"The Queensland Government is delivering more than $1.92 billion in critical road safety infrastructure upgrades over four years, but we need every Queenslander to drive so others survive."
