Significant upgrades to Tasmania's second largest hydro power station have been completed.
Minister for Energy and Renewables, Nick Duigan, said a major part of the upgrades has finished, including the first stage of recoating the inside of the Poatina penstock and 5.6km headrace tunnel.
"Poatina is a critical asset for the State, with the station generating around 10 per cent of Tasmania's energy needs," Minister Duigan said.
"The upgrade to the penstock, as well as major electrical upgrades and the refurbishment of a 60-year-old generating unit, will ensure reliability of the station for many more decades.
"New materials and technology will deliver more efficient power generation."
In addition to the penstock upgrades and maintenance, Hydro Tasmania is also progressing a $200 million investment in upgrading all six of the station's turbines.
Refurbishment of the second generating unit is expected to be completed in early 2027, with the second stage of the penstock recoating planned for mid-2027
"Our Government is continuing to build the infrastructure and deliver the services Tasmania must have as part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future," Minister Duigan said.
"These important upgrades will help futureproof our electricity assets, delivering improved reliability with less maintenance required.
"Upgrading our power capabilities delivers on our commitment to grow our Northern economy outlined in the Northern Economic Plan.
"This work will ensure our valuable hydropower assets continue to deliver safe and clean energy for all Tasmanians for decades to come."
