Police are responding to fatal crash near Tweed Heads

A man has died following a crash in the state's north overnight.

Just before 12.30am (Tuesday 24 January 2023), emergency services were called to the northbound lanes of the Pacific Highway, at Chinderah, about 10km south of Tweed Heads, following reports of a two-vehicle crash.

Police were told the driver of a silver Mitsubishi sedan left the roadway and crashed into the rear of a parked B-double truck, before becoming engulfed in flames.

After Fire and Rescue NSW extinguished the blaze, a body of a man was found in the vehicle, which is yet to be formally identified.

Officers from Tweed/Byron Police District established a crime scene, which was examined by specialist forensic police, and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash commenced.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
