Police arrest and charged armed man at Wollongong

Police attached to Wollongong Police District have arrested an armed man wanted for two outstanding warrants in Wollongong overnight.

About 1.20am today (Friday 7 June 2019), police noticed a man wanted for warrants walking along Crown Street.

As police approached the 19-year-old man he ran from police north along Harbour Street and then into a unit complex in Crown Street allegedly carrying a large knife.

Police requested the man surrender the knife and when he failed to comply he was Tasered.

The man continued to run from police up a stairwell where he was Tasered a second time. The man dropped the knife and was arrested.

He was taken to Wollongong Police Station and charged with use weapon to avoid apprehension and the two warrants.

He was refused bail and is expected to appear in Wollongong Local Court today (Friday 7 June 2019).
