Police Arrest Man After Courier Van Crash At Prospect

A man was arrested after trying to steal a courier van at Prospect this morning.

Police were called to Regency Road, Prospect just after 10am on Tuesday 28 April by reports of a car theft.

A courier driver had left his vehicle to make a delivery and when he returned to the van, there was someone else sitting in the driver's seat.

The two men scuffled as the suspect allegedly tried to drive away. The van crashed into a tree a short distance down the road.

The suspect was arrested at the scene and taken to hospital for assessment.

The victim, a 41-year-old man, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also taken to hospital by ambulance as a precaution.

The arrested man, a 45-year-old Hillcrest man, was charged with illegal use of a motor vehicle, drive unlicensed, cause harm by dangerous driving and acts to endanger life. He was refused police bail and will appear in court tomorrow, Wednesday 29 April.

The van was towed from the scene.

Police issue a warning to drivers to ensure their vehicles are locked and secure at all times, even if they are only leaving them for a short period, to help prevent opportunistic thefts.
