Police have arrested a man following a fire at a service station in Fitzroy overnight.
It's alleged a man entered a service station on Victoria Parade about 11.30pm and poured petrol throughout the premises before threatening the lone attendant.
The attendant managed to call police but as he was doing so the man advanced on him and a scuffle ensued.
Officers arrived quickly and noticed the premises on fire.
As they approached the store, the men inside were forced out by an explosion.
The members then managed to get the pair to safety.
A 21-year-old man was arrested at the scene and has been taken to hospital under police guard.
Fortunately no one was seriously injured during the incident.
