Police arrest man over pursuit with stolen Golf, South Australia

Police have arrested a man following a pursuit with a stolen car across several metropolitan suburbs this afternoon.

About 3.50pm on Thursday 25 April police attempted to stop a stolen white Volkswagen Golf travelling at speed on Diagonal Road, Oaklands Park. The driver refused to stop and was last seen heading towards Glenelg where police terminated the pursuit for safety reasons.

The car was reported stolen from the Adelaide CBD earlier this morning.

The Police Helicopter (PolAir) was brought in to assist in the search and picked up the stolen car travelling north on West Lakes Boulevard, Albert Park about 4.15pm.

PolAir monitored the stolen Golf from the air as it travelled through several western suburbs along Torrens Road, Regency Road and into the northern suburbs along Grand Junction Road and Bridge Road. The stolen car continued driving along Salisbury Highway and into backstreets of Parafield Gardens.

The driver of the Golf continued driving into the north eastern suburbs before travelling back through the Adelaide CBD via Main North and Churchill Road's.

Police patrols set up road spikes along Goodwood Road as the Golf passed through the city to the inner southern suburbs. The tyres were successfully spiked however the car continued on through the southern suburbs before coming back into the CBD.

PolAir lost sight of the vehicle near King William Street and patrols converged on the area locating the stolen car abandoned in Gawler Place just after 5.30pm.

A short time later, a police patrol stopped and spoke with a man on Hindley Street who they suspect was the alleged driver.

A 23-year-old man from Glanville was charged with a number of offences including illegal use of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving to escape police pursuit and driving while disqualified. He has been refused bail and is expected to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court tomorrow.
