Police charge man after armed robbery - Northern Region

A man will face court as investigations continue into an alleged armed robbery on the Mid North Coast last month.

About 8.15pm on Sunday 25 July 2021, a 67-year-old male employee was inside a bowling club on Combined Street, Wingham, when three men – allegedly armed with knives and a samurai sword – entered the club.

Two of the men demanded cash from the employee before he was injured with a knife.

The third man approached a 43-year-old male patron and allegedly threatened him with a sword. During an altercation, the patron was able to wrestle the weapon from the armed man.

All three men then fled the scene in a Volkswagen Tiguan, which has since been recovered.

The employee and patron recieved minor hand injuries and were taken to Manning Base Hospital for treatment. They have since been released.

Initial inquiries were conducted by Manning-Great Lakes Police, before detectives from the State Crime Command's Robbery and Serious Crime Squad took carriage of the investigation under Strike Force Savery.

About 11.30am yesterday (Wednesday 25 August 2021), local officers arrested a 35-year-old man on Valarie Street, Taree.

He was taken to Taree Police Station where he was charged with two counts of armed robbery.

Police will allege in court the man threatened a male patron with a weapon before fleeing the scene.

The Taree man was refused bail to appear at Foster Local Court today (Thursday 26 August 20201).

As investigations continue, police would like to speak to two other men they believe may be able to assist them with their inquiries.

As investigations continue, police are urging anyone who may have dashcam footage from the surrounding area between 8pm and 8.30pm or who may have seen or heard anything to contact Taree Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
