Police charge man after assaulting police - Riverwood

A man has been charged after two officers were injured in Sydney's south-west today.

About 3pm (Friday 23 October 2020), officers attached to St George Police Area Command attempted to stop a man on Washington Avenue, Riverwood, when he ran from police.

After a short foot pursuit, the 43-year-old man was arrested on Roosevelt Avenue.

The man allegedly began fighting with police, causing a police radio to fall to the ground, which the man then used to strike a Constable to the head. A second Constable was also injured during the melee.

The man, along with the two officers, was taken to St George Hospital for treatment.

Upon his release, he was conveyed to Kogarah Police Station and charged with resist officer in execution of duty and wound police officer executing duty reckless as to cause actual bodily harm.

Officers also executed a revocation of an intensive corrections order and arrest warrant for robbery and drug offences.

The Belmore man was refused bail to appear in Parramatta Bail Court tomorrow (Saturday 24 October 2020).

One Constable required stitches to his head wound. Both officers have been released from hospital.
