Police charge man after fatal crash - Hume Highway, near Albury

A man will face court today after being charged in relation to a fatal crash earlier this year in the state's south.

About 8.20pm on Thursday 28 March 2019, emergency services were called to Sweetwater Creek Bridge on the Hume Highway at Mullengandra, following reports of a crash between a Mazda utility, that was towing a Morris Minor van on a trailer, and a B-double truck.

The Mazda utility flipped onto its roof on impact and caught fire; the driver, a 63-year-old Queensland man, died at the scene.

The 46-year-old truck driver was treated before being airlifted to Canberra Hospital in a serious but stable condition with head and back injuries.

Officers attached to Murray River Police District commenced investigations into the crash.

Mandatory testing analysis of the truck driver allegedly detected methylamphetamine in his blood.

Yesterday (Wednesday 17 July 2019), the man attended Albury Police Station where he was placed under arrest.

He was charged with dangerous driving occasioning death - driving under the influence, dangerous driving occasioning death – drive manner dangerous, negligent driving occasioning death plus an additional 13 various drug and driving offences.

The man was bail refused to appear at Albury Local Court today (Thursday 18 July 2019).
