Police charge man after police pursuit near Tamworth

A man has been charged following a police pursuit involving a stolen vehicle which allegedly reached speeds of 190km/h near Tamworth at the weekend.

About 11.20am on Saturday (1 August 2020), officers attached to the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command detected a silver Kia Cerato hatchback allegedly travelling at 128km/h on the New England Highway at Timbumburi.

Police will allege the vehicle was travelling at 128km/h.

Attempts to stop the vehicle failed and a pursuit was initiated by Tamworth Highway Patrol.

It is alleged the vehicle reached speeds of 190km/h in a 100km/h zone while travelling through South Tamworth, before the pursuit was terminated.

The vehicle was sighted again on the New England Highway, north of Bendemeer a short time later, when it is alleged the hatchback left the roadway and hit a ditch.

Police will allege the driver, a 22-year-old man, ran from the vehicle and was arrested soon after.

Checks on the vehicle revealed it was reported stolen from the Blacktown area on Tuesday 28 July 2020.

The man was taken to Armidale Police Station where he was charged with exceed speed limit >45km/h (x2), drive while disqualified (x2), exceed speed limit >10km/h, police pursuit and dangerous driving (x2).

He was bail refused to appear before Armidale Local Court on Monday 10 October 2020.
