Police Charge Man After Pursuit At Newcastle 7 May

A man has been charged after a pursuit in Newcastle early this morning.

About 3.40am (Wednesday 7 May 2025), police were patrolling the Newcastle Inner City Bypass when they detected a sedan allegedly travelling at high speed.

Police attempted to stop the vehicle twice between Jesmond and New Lambton Heights; however, the driver allegedly failed to stop and continued driving at high speed.

A short time later, when the driver allegedly failed to stop when directed, a pursuit was initiated.

Police will allege that the driver travelled at speeds of up to 160km/h in a signposted 60km/h zone.

Officers followed the vehicle to Jesmond where the driver was arrested following a brief struggle.

A folding knife was allegedly found when the 48-year-old man was searched.

He was taken to Newcastle Police Station where he was charged with police pursuit - not stop - drive at speed, class A motor vehicle exceed speed greater than 45 km/h - estimated, and carry cutting weapon upon apprehension.

He was granted strict conditional bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 22 May 2025.

The man's licence was also suspended.
