Police charge man after pursuit at Tamworth

A man and a teenage boy have been arrested following a pursuit in Gunnedah overnight.

About 2.50am (Saturday 19 March 2022), officers attached to Oxley Police District were patrolling the Oxley Highway, Gunnedah, when they attempted to stop a Nissan Navara after receiving reports it was allegedly stolen.

The Nissan failed to stop, and a pursuit was initiated and continued to Chandos Street, where the vehicle came to a stop after driving over the footpath of a carpark.

The two male occupants – a 21-year-old man and a 17-year-old teenage boy – attempted to flee on foot a short foot pursuit ensued.

The man allegedly resisted police when they attempted to arrest him, before capsicum spray was deployed.

The pair was arrested and taken to Gunnedah Police Station where the man was charged with take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, class A motor vehicle exceed speed > 45km/h – estimated, never licenced person drive vehicle on road – prior offence, resist officer in execution of duty, and possess prohibited drug.

He was refused bail to appear before Tamworth Local Court today (Saturday 19 March 2022).

The teenage boy was released, pending further inquiries.
