Police Charge Man After Unit Fire - Merrylands

A man will appear in court tomorrow (Wednesday 10 July 2024) after being charged following a unit fire in Sydney's west.

About 3.15am today (Tuesday 9 July 2024), emergency services were called to an address on Pitt Street, Merrylands, following reports of a unit fire.

The fire was extinguished by Fire and Rescue NSW.

Residents of adjoining units were evacuated as a precaution. No one was injured in the incident.

Officers from Cumberland Police Area Command attended and were told a man was seen running from the scene.

Police established a crime scene and commenced investigations into the circumstance surrounding the incident.

A short time later, a 55-year-old man was arrested near the address.

He was taken to Granville Police Station where he was charged with damage property by fire/explosion more than $15000.

He was refused bail to appear before Parramatta Local Court tomorrow (Wednesday 10 July 2024).
