Police Charge Man After Unit Fire - Pyrmont

A man will face Court after being charged following a home unit fire which broke out in a unit block in Pyrmont earlier this morning.

Emergency services were called to the six-level block on Jones Street about 1.30am (Tuesday 18 November 2025), after a unit on level four was seen alight.

About 60 people were evacuated as a precaution while Fire and Rescue NSW worked to extinguish the blaze.

The fire was brought under control by 2.30am but the unit where it's believed to have started was destroyed.

A man, who lived in the unit, was arrested at the scene and was taken to Day Street Police Station.

Officers attached to Sydney City Police Area Command established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the circumstances of the fire.

There were no injuries reported as a consequence of the fire; however, police have been told an elderly woman was taken to hospital for a pre-existing medical condition.

Following inquiries, a 76-year-old man was charged with damage property by fire – more than $15,000.

He was refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 7 tomorrow (Wednesday 19 November 2025)
