Police charge man over alleged theft of a large quantity of property in Townsville

Officer's from Townsville's Rapid Actions and Patrols (RAP) yesterday charged a man with stealing in relation to a significant amount of property allegedly removed from flood affected homes in Townsville.

Police will allege that between February 1 and February 21 property with an estimated value of between 50 and 80 thousand dollars was taken from properties in Townsville.

A search warrant was executed yesterday at a Mount Louisa address with police locating a large quantity of alleged stolen property inside a shipping container.

Police will allege the property was removed from the yards of homes and businesses impacted by the recent Townsville flood with the items often in front yards drying out.

Police were alerted to the man's activities yesterday morning after a member of the public saw him allegedly taking property in Idalia.

Police attended and located the man in the front yard of a home on Summerlake Court where he was arrested.

Most of the property removed were expensive items such as leather furniture (lounges, chairs etc), dining tables, dining suites, beds, fridges and washing machines.

A 57-year-old Mount Louisa man has been charged with two counts of stealing and is due to appear in the Townsville Magistrates Court on March 22.

Extra police are patrolling these areas and people should stay away from flood affected streets unless they have a legitimate reason to be there.
