Police charge man over armed robbery, Southport

Police have charged a 47-year-old man in relation to an alleged armed robbery at a service station at Southport overnight.

Around 8.50pm it is alleged a man entered the Marine Parade business and made demands for tobacco and cigarettes. The employee refused to hand over any items at which time the man produced a hammer and allegedly damaged a wall and a computer.

The store employee handed over a quantity of cigarettes before the man fled the scene in a southerly direction.

Subsequent police investigations led them to arrest a man at a nearby residence.

A 47-year-old man has been charged with armed robbery and wilful damage.

He is expected to face Southport Magistrates Court today.
